Governors’ Development Evening

Lydiate Learning Trust’s (LLT) Governor Development Evenings have been a key part of strengthening governance across our primary and secondary schools since 2017. Bringing together Governors, Directors (Trustees), and Academy Senior Leaders, these three-hour events are designed to share best practice, develop critical skills, and ensure every child gets the best possible education.

These evenings feature presentations, interactive workshops, and in-depth discussions, tackling topics that matter most to our schools, from teacher training and curriculum planning to financial oversight and strategic development. Recognising the demands on our Governors and Directors, LLT creates a supportive environment where everyone can contribute and learn, complete with refreshments and collaborative spaces.

LLT’s Governor Development Evenings also reinforce our commitment to high standards, underpinned by our Induction and Code of Conduct. With insights from the Confederation of School Trusts, Department for Education, National Governance Association, and more, our CEO and Senior Governance Professional ensure sessions reflect the latest thinking and best practice. This ongoing programme equips our Governors and Directors with the confidence, knowledge, and strategies needed to deliver outstanding governance – and ultimately, outstanding education – for every child.

Sophie Priest, Governor, Childwall Sports and Science Academy “The Governor Development Evening are always extremely useful as you can touch base outside normal meetings which have set agendas. We’ve had open discussions as a group, and it’s been good to hear from people on the Lydiate Learning Trust Board. The real-life scenarios we’ve worked through can be applied to our governors role and were thought provoking.”

Daniel Hains, Headteacher, The Grange Primary School “It has been useful to sit down and discuss tonight’s topics with our governors. The safeguarding challenges were challenging and useful when measuring our practice. It’s been interesting having discussions in a different way.”

Matthew Brady, Teacher and Governor, Childwall Sports and Science Academy “The Governor Development Evening has helped me understand the role of Lydiate Learning Trust in school operations and what it does for Childwall. This is my first event, and I found the new governors induction with Ann Stahler especially useful and now understand more about the governance structure and my role.”

Liz MacGarvey, Governor, Knotty Ash Primary School, “This event reinforces the view that being a governor is a huge responsibility. I’m glad I attended.”

David Rushworth, Governor, Knotty Ash Primary School “This event makes you stand back from your daily life and think about things which provides a huge benefit. The safeguarding and cyber online safety sessions were interesting.”
